TEXT IN CONTEXT: A cross-genre symposium

Creative practitioners are increasingly breaking out of their individual forms to explore cross-genre possibilities. This symposium brings together writers, artists and performers from various disciplines. Through short performances, presentations and discussions, it will generate a creative space for new explorations, connections and audiences. All are welcome.

Participants include Nina Rapi, Cherry Smyth, Anjan Saha, Nicholas McInerny, Oreet Ashery, Uriel Orlow, Olumide Popoola, Jennifer Farmer, Clare Morgan, William Fontaine.

HOWARD BARKER with Dzifa Benson and Mikhail Karikis

We continue with an exciting evening of new work by three groundbreaking artists, including the premiere of a new, short play by Howard Barker, ‘Britain’s greatest living playwright’ (The Times). Barker is a unique voice who creates highly theatrical work and is the founder of The Wrestling School. Mikhail Karikis, sound artist extraordinaire, and Dzifa Benson, High Priestess of the spoken word, have dazzled audiences internationally with their bold performances. The evening closes with the artists in discussion with Nina Rapi, award-winning playwright and editor of Brand.

SPREAD THE WORD LITERATURE PROJECT PRESENTS: INDEPENDENTS DAY

Panel Discussion and Masterclasses
Get under the skin of independent publishers and their decision-making.

Independent publishers produce some of the most exciting, zestful and cutting edge work around. Often seen as risk takers discovering unlikely voices, what makes independent publishers tick? What do they look for in new writing?

Join us at Foyles' flagship store on July 4th to find out.

Panel Discussion:
Four publishers and writer/editors share what makes them passionate about their work. They will discuss their editorial approaches, how they engage with their readership and, how in a crowded publishing market, they survive and succeed.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A session, you can submit your questions in early by email (a selection of your questions will be chosen by Spread the Word and answered by the panel), and there will also be a chance to ask questions from the floor on the day.

Master Classes:
Understanding Editing by Nina Rapi
This masterclass will help you think like an editor. Nina will talk about the qualities she looks for in a piece of writing and how she selects work for Brand. She’ll discuss common problems that can flaw promising work – for example in pace, language, consistency of tone, realisation of ideas – and how she helps a writer to shape up their work. Thinking like an editor will help you bring a dispassionate eye to your writing and enable you to finesse it into a final, sparkling draft.

Promoting Your Work by Tom Chivers
How do you get potential publishers to notice your work? And when it’s published how do you help your publisher get it to an audience? Tom Chivers will talk you through the a to z of promoting your work including print, online and live lit approaches. Using examples of successful practice, he’ll look at what’s worked for different writers and different genres.

The Panel:
Nina Rapi is an award winning playwright and short story writer, produced and published in the UK, Greece, India and USA. She is also the editor of BRAND literary magazine. Tom Chivers is a writer, editor and promoter, born London, 1983. He runs live literature producer and small press Penned in the Margins, co-edits literary journal Tears in the Fence and co-founded London Word Festival, for which he has recently received a Paul Hamlyn Breakthrough Award. His publications include How To Build A City (Salt, 2009), The Terrors (Nine Arches, 2009) and, as editor, Generation Txt (2006) and City State: New London Poetry (2009). Courttia Newland is a novelist and playwright. He is the co-editor of the anthology IC3: The Penguin Book of New Black Writing in Britain. Courttia is also the co-founder and editor of the Tell Tales series, a short story anthology. www.telltales.co.uk

Tom Chalmers set-up Legend Press in 2005, when aged 25. Legend Press has recently launched its first non-fiction lists along with a range of successful across-industry initiatives. In 2008, Tom acquired a further small publisher, Paperbooks, which is run from the same London office. If your answer is yes, then sign up for this masterclass! Glean gems of wisdom from tutor Nina Rapi, as she shares her story of how she set up the newly flourishing BRAND magazine. Learn about the nuts and bolts of starting a magazine, from finding collaborators, suppliers and finances, to choosing the style, genre, title and identity. And finally, get to work and put together an action plan for how to actualise your own idea for a magazine or journal.

A chance to meet and speak with 21st century publishers of short fiction and find out where they stand in relation to the paper/online divide. Speakers Pete Carvill of 3AM magazine (paper and online), Nina Rapi of Brand magazine (paper), Mike Fell of Litro (paper and online) and Heidi James of Social Disease, will be joined by author Mark Liam Piggott, whose writing is published on and offline and whose debut hard copy novel is due out in May.
