Yang Lian

Yang Lian was born in Switzerland but brought up in Beijing. He belonged to the ménglóng or ‘misty’ poetry underground movement in the late 70s that challenged both pro- and anti-government propaganda and was the first new poetry movement in China since 1949. Yang Lian has published seven selections of poems, two selections of prose and many essays in Chinese. His work has been translated into more than twenty languages. He was awarded the Flaiano International Poetry Prize (Italy, 1999) and his book, Where the Sea Stands Still: New Poems, was a Poetry Books Society Recommended Translation in 1999. Concentric Circles was published by Bloodaxe Books in 2005. His most recent work in English translation is Riding Pisces: Poems from Five Collections (Shearsman Books, 2008) and Lee Valley Poems (Bloodaxe Books, 2009). He is co-editing The Anthology of Contemporary Chinese Poetry with WN Herbert, forthcoming from Bloodaxe. Yang Lian has been living in London since 1997 where he has just co-ordinated the first English and Chinese Poetry Festival.
